JOBS for the week

-

■ Spring clean your borders – hoe off or dig up emerging weeds and mulch with compost or well rotted manure. You can also add a fertilizer such as chicken manure, seaweed or a slow release brand. ■ In the veg garden, if conditions are good, it’s outdoor sowing and planting time for loads of crops – leeks, peas, beetroot, radish, cauliflower, onions, carrots, spinach, broccoli, cabbage, artichoke, broad beans, swiss chard and spinach.

■ Cut back dead ferns to reveal new shoots.

■ Divide and replant kniphofia. ■ Give plants in pots a boost with some liquid fertiliser.

■ Check on your seedlings – do they need watering? Bedding plants that have developed true leaves are ready to be pricked out and potted individually. Tomato seedlings may be big enough to pot on.

■ Take sedum cuttings now from active growth.

■ Plant out strawberries and main crop potatoes.

■ Sow sweet peas outdoors now or plant out autumn sown sweet peas.
