As I watched news of this week’s riots in Belfast, my first thought was jealousy – at least they were getting out and meeting people.

But we have to hope the rioters were observing the rules we’ve all been sticking to.

It was encouragin­g to see most of them wearing masks.

Paramilita­ry groups in Northern Ireland have been ahead of the game on this issue. They were always careful to wear thick face coverings long before the rest of us joined in. I expect that because of

this, members of the UVF and IRA have had far fewer colds and sniffles over the years than other people, and I think we should give credit where it’s due – to their commitment to public health.
