January 18, 1981
Suspected race hate blaze at birthday party killed 13 black youngsters, aged 14-22, in South East London. On March 2, 20,000 marched with placards saying “13 Dead, Nothing Said”. No charges brought over fire.
Brixton Riots April 11, 1981
Three days of mayhem. Shops torched and looted as the riots exploded out of control.
Death of Colin Roach January 12, 1983
Colin Roach, 21, died from gun wounds at Stoke Newington Police Station. Police said it was suicide, but allegations followed of a cover-up.
Broadwater Farm Riots, Tottenham October 6, 1985
Mum Cynthia Jarrett, 49, died from heart failure in police raid for stolen property. Nothing was found. Trouble erupted the next day. PC Keith Blakelock was hacked to death. A week earlier, Brixton mum Cherry Groce, 37, was shot and paralysed by police searching for her son.
Stephen Lawrence– April 22, 1993
Stephen, 18, was murdered in Eltham, South East London. Met Police were criticised and 1999 Macpherson Report concluded it was “institutionally racist”. Gary Dobson and David Norris found guilty of his murder in 2012.
Mark Duggan August 4, 2011
Mark, 29, shot dead by officers in Tottenham, sparking UK-wide riots. In 2019 the family settled a damages claim against the Met, which did not accept liability.
