Killer breaks in through victim’s loft

- BY JOHN KELLY

A KILLER created a secret loft passage to sneak into his neighbours’ house then lay in wait to attack them with a crossbow.

Anthony Lawrence, 55, had dismantled brickwork to get into the home of Laura Sugden, 29, and her partner Shane Gilmer.

After returning home from a night out, pregnant Laura saw a mark on the carpet where Lawrence had landed before he walked out of a bedroom and attacked them.

She was badly injured when a crossbow bolt sliced through her neck in January 2018.

When Shane, 30, ran to her aid, he suffered a fatal wound to his stomach.

Humberside Police revealed a picture of the secret passage at the properties in Southburn, East Yorkshire, during an inquest at Hull Coroners’ Court into Shane’s death.

After the verdict of unlawful killing, Laura said: “It is unbelievable that the sale of such a lethal, medieval weapon remains unregulated in our modern society.”

The body of Lawrence was found in a vehicle following a manhunt.

He also threatened the couple, claiming he was being evicted because they reported his cannabis use.
