Labour MPs call for vote change
KEIR Starmer is facing a flood of calls for Labour to scrap the “rigged” voting system after the Party’s disastrous defeat in the last election.
Almost a third of Labour MPs and members of more than 200 local parties want to get rid of the current first-past-the-post voting system in favour of proportional representation.
A poll found 76% of Labour members back PR, which would need a change in the law to be introduced.
Labour faces an unprecedented task of winning 123 seats to land a majority at the next election. A new campaign group, Labour for a New Democracy, and former Shadow Chancellor John McDonnell are spearheading the drive for PR.
It has support across the party, including from left-wing group Momentum.
Centrist MP Ruth Cadbury said: “This Government is undermining democracy and we need a fairer voting system.”
