It all comes out in the wash

Bathtime beats award, says Carey She is tipped to walk away with her first Oscar but says nothing gets in the way of bathtime with the kids.

Carey Mulligan

The 35-year-old star, who plays avenging medical student Cassie in Promising Young Woman, is mum to Evelyn, five, and Wilfred, three, with Mumford & Sons frontman Marcus Mumford, 34.

She says: “I feel very strongly about my job and I love my job and it’s the best job in the world, but also, it is a job.

“It can’t be more important than when I have to get home and have to do bathtime. Someone said the other day, ‘Did you bring Cassie home with you?’ And I was like, ‘The nails I brought home, the hair extensions I brought home, but everything else, you can’t bring that into a house with two kids. You’ve got to leave all of that stuff at work. So I think it’s a system that works for me for now.”

This is Carey’s second Oscar nomination. Her first was for An Education in 2009.

Of that first experience, she says: “I was just so overwhelmed by the whole thing. I just remember being in a room with Sandra Bullock and being, ‘This is the greatest moment of my life’.”

But there is one woman who has been driving her recent work – former Oscar winner Nicole Kidman, 53. “She was actually somewhat of an inspiration for us for Promising Young Woman,” says Carey.

“She’s just extraordinary. She’s sort of simultaneously charming, and enticing, and terrifying. I think it’s just a masterclass.”

May the lessons pay off tonight.

Maria Bakalova is the little-known 24-year-old Bulgarian actress tipped to walk away with an Oscar for her role in Borat.

Close pal Mila Robert reveals: “She was 19, I think, and even then at the top of her Facebook profile it was written, ‘I’m going to be a great movie star one day’.”

Jagshemash.

Sir Anthony Hopkins

missed being awarded his BAFTA virtually because he was too busy painting. But tonight the stars will walk the red carpet and accept awards without face masks.
