FRANKIE MCAVOY has put himself into serious contention to become Preston’s new boss after winning five out of his eight caretaker games since the sacking of Alex Neil in March.

After beating Forest, he said: ”I didn’t want the last game to go out in a whimper and we came back and won it.”

Talks start next week and having stopped Preston’s plunge towards danger, the Scot has a good chance of getting the gig.

They were a goal down to a James Garner 25-yard stunner inside 17 minutes, but stormed back with controversial strikes from Tom Bayliss and Liam Lindsay.

“Both goals shouldn’t

have been allowed,” said Forest manager Chris Hughton.

“The first one is handball. The second one, the linesman puts his flag up for offside against Alan Browne, he comes back onside and impeded Cyrus Christie.”

Bayliss met Scott Sinclair’s cross in the 53rd minute for his first Preston goal and then Lindsay headed the winner 15 minutes later.

McAvoy said of his time at Preston: “We were in a precarious position but managed to turn it round. It is up to the club when they want to make the decision.

“I’ve enjoyed my time, I love Preston, my family is settled. I’m not going to rule it out.”
