Rubbish ‘left for month’ in Boris bin plan
SMELLY rubbish could pile up for a month under Boris Johnson’s chaotic bin collection plans.
The PM is to order all councils to pick up food waste, glass and recyclables weekly by 2023.
But local authority leaders fear the new rules will delay the collection of ordinary rubbish for a month at a time.
Most of the UK’s 341 councils were forced to switch to fortnightly pickups due to austerity cuts.
But plans in the Environment Bill unveiled in last week’s Queen’s Speech, call for standardising bins... no matter the surroundings.
Peter Fleming, Tory leader of Kent’s Sevenoaks council, added: “It doesn’t make sense to send a big lorry down a lane to pick up a bottle when bottle banks are widely available.”’
But Environment Secretary George Eustice said the plans will “boost recycling” and reduce landfill.
