Tragic end to son’s years of searching for real mum

- BY NATHAN BEVAN

A man searching for his mum after discovering he was adopted as a baby, finally found her – lying dead in her home.

Steven Smith, 41, had spent decades looking for Daphne Morfydd Jones, 62.

And he decided to pay her a surprise visit on the day before Mother’s Day.

But instead of being reunited, the security officer found his mum’s body in Bethnal Green, East London.

He said: “I noticed a pile of unopened letters on the doorstep. I knocked on the neighbours’ door and they said they hadn’t seen her for a few weeks.”

HEART

Steven found the back door unlocked and went in. He said: “I noticed her slumped in the bathroom. She’d been dead a while – heart attack, apparently.”

He had her ashes scattered at a cemetery near his Essex home. He said: “Now we can always be close to each other.”

Steven was born in Wales but moved with Daphne to London when he was three months old.

His new family told him he was adopted when he was a teenager, but the case details had been lost.

During his search he discovered many brothers and sisters. They plan a get-together at Christmas.
