My husband is immune to me snogging other men... it was kind of the deal when we married

“So there’s a fluidity about us working together that works. But we work apart a lot as well.

“It’s sort of a rarity for us to do a project together.

“I think John and I really allow for a very full life outside of each other.

“We implicitly trust each other – we adore each other, but we have to cope with a lot of time apart as well.”

Last August, Emily and John left their New York home to “bubble up” with her sister Felicity, her actor husband Stanley Tucci and their kids.

Stanley, 60 – who also appeared alongside Emily in The Devil Wears Prada – met at Emily’s wedding.

Emily says of the family bubble: “Being around little ones during the pandemic was such a saving grace.

“They would just be bouncing around the house, and your job is to protect them from what is happening and make sure their life remains joyful. That was a pretty great lifeline for John and me during the pandemic, for sure.”

Emily is now in Spain working on a new six-part Western drama called The English. Her versatility and success can be traced back to her days growing up in Roehampton, South West London, as one of four children to an actress mother and barrister father.

She began appearing in school plays at the age of 12 and just four years later was signed up by an agent who spotted her in the musical Bliss at the Edinburgh Festival.

Instead of going to college to study languages so she could become a translator as planned, Emily went straight into West End theatre.

She overcame a childhood stutter and appeared opposite Dame Judi Dench in Sir Peter Hall’s production of The Royal Family at the Haymarket Theatre.

Her next move was to star in Romeo and Juliet at the Chichester Festival when she was 20.

Then the big screen beckoned – and, despite recently admitting she “really didn’t really want to be an actress”, she has been in 40 movies.

Emily is thrilled her kids can watch her latest Disney film.

And she’s still humble when it comes to her successes.

“My journey in the business has never been anything meteoric,” she says.

“It’s been this slow and steady unveiling of what it has become now. I still disassociate with it because things like this are so big that it’s hard for me to wrap my head around it all.”
