Mum’s mad about 1950s

-

THEATRE manager Rebecca Hurd loves making her home look like a 1950s film set, even though her family prefer the present day.

The mum admits her ten-year-old son George is “tech mad” and husband Amos, 51, is a computer programmer.

But Ruth, 44, just hides away their hardware and surrounds herself with 1950s knick-knacks.

She said: “I prefer being stuck in the past. I’d rather look at a vintage tea set or some pineapple glassware than a computer.”

One treasured possession is a green, geometric-design carpet, which she says is older than her. Ruth said: “I’ve also got an original ‘50s wardrobe and dressing table and a beautiful dusky pink tallboy that I paid £27 for on eBay.”

She added: “I dress and live vintage 24/7. I go to a rock ‘n’ roll club every week and my husband sometimes gets his arm twisted into wearing 1950s Hawaiian shirts.

“I’ve even roped him into jiving.”

Ruth’s ‘50s fetish started in 1999 when she saw a period dress in a London shop.

She has been collecting vintage clothing ever since and now owns 200 circle skirts.

She said: “My dressing room looks like a vintage boutique. All my clothes are listed as separate items on my home insurance. They are my valuables.

“Dressing so I stand out from the crowd gives me confidence. I just wish I could tell my 20-year-old self: ‘Wear what you want. Stop being like everyone else. You’ll be happier’.”
