STARLINGS

-

Many will remember when starlings were common across the country – and will be baffled they are now on a list of animals hurtling towards extinction.

Most of us have seen these pretty, speckled birds, which fly in staggeringly beautiful formations called a murmuration, drawing shapes in the sky.

But the starling population has fallen by more than 80% in recent years, meaning they are now on the critical list of UK birds most at risk.

The decline is believed to be due to the loss of permanent pasture, increased use of farm chemicals and a shortage of food and nesting sites around the UK.

HELP THEM: Plant trees and bushes for them to roost in and leave food and water out in winter.

SEE THEM: At Tees Valley Wildlife

Trust’s Portrack Marsh. At dusk in winter, you might see the marvellous sight of

hundreds going to roost.
