‘Nationalise Big 5 to ease energy bills’
BIG energy firms should be taken into public ownership to cut soaring household bills, a union says.
Unison says reforms are needed if supplies and prices are to be stabilised.
It calls for the retail arms of British Gas, Ovo, EDF, Eon and Scottish Power to be nationalised.
Unison general secretary Christina McAnea said: “Customers are bailing out a poorly regulated energy market. It’s far better – and cheaper – to take the retail wings of the biggest five energy suppliers into public ownership.
“They could plan, buy at better rates and make bills more affordable.”
Fees could rise as much as £600 a year. Labour has called for VAT to be axed on bills. Some MPs want green levies ditched too.
