Yet another PM promise misses bus
BUS fares rose more than 8p per pound last year, blowing a hole in Boris Johnson’s ‘levelling-up’ vow to keep them down.
Labour claims the rises broke records, adding to the cost of living crisis as people return to work with Covid restrictions easing.
Shadow Transport Secretary Louise Haigh said: “It’s more proof you cannot believe a word this PM says.” Her analysis shows the eight highest monthly price rises since records began in 1987 have come in the pandemic.
The lowest-paid are hit hardest, with a billion bus journeys made by those earning £25,000 or less.
In contrast, people with salaries of £50,000 or more travel by bus just 141 million times.
