players fell to the turf holding their heads after being hit by a bottle, with the club confirming a fan had been arrested by Merseyside Police.

But the ugly incident marred Villa’s win and skipper Tyrone Mings said: “It was disgusting really.

“It is about all they have got... they tried to make it ugly, tried to make it an intimidating atmosphere and we came and got the three points.

“That will hopefully be dealt with, but all you can do is get up and carry on.”

Defender Cash revealed: “It was crazy – it hit me straight on the head. It’s not nice having that.”

And figures released on Friday showed arrests at matches across the top five English leagues are at their highest levels in years, with fan disorder “getting worse” according to football policing in the UK.

Pundit Jermaine Jenas said: “It’s becoming too often in the Premier League now.

“It’s disgusting. It’s going back to old times, the dark ages of football. Bottles and coins being thrown on to the pitch.

“There needs to be some serious punishments handed out to all the clubs behaving in this way.

“This is not just Everton Football Club.

“This has happened at various stadiums all season and they need to stamp it out.

“Whatever it may be, they need some punishments to stop it happening again.”

In a statement after the game, Everton confirmed they will issue bans to any supporters identified throwing objects while caretaker manager Duncan Ferguson branded the incident “disgraceful”.
