Singletons in flats top risk list for fraud
ADULTS living alone in a rented flat are most likely to fall victim to computer hacking or online fraud, figures show.
While physical thefts fell 18% in the year to September 2021 due to Covid restrictions, computer hacking was up 161% and fraud by 36%.
And the Office for National Statistics data revealed single people renting homes in cities were most at risk.
Jonathan Rolande of the National Association of Property Buyers said while some online frauds are sophisticated, most scammers “operate at the other end of the scale”.
He urged people to destroy paperwork, be vigilant when giving bank details, and to not reply to suspicious texts or emails.
