The lads did us proud
Sport has been dragged through the mud in recent times, mired in allegations of racism and sexism.
Future stars are influenced by today’s crop – so you might fear things will not get better any time soon.
Then something special happens to lift your spirits.
A Premier League Truce Tournament called We Are All Equal was held at St George’s Park, the training base
of England’s football team. Young lads from Premier League clubs completed projects on the First World War, stepped into the trenches at the Staffordshire Regiment Museum, and visited the National Memorial Arboretum.
But it was the words of one lad from Norwich City Academy that inspired me.
Lynden Long, 11, said: “At Norwich, we always do something extra – workshops on mental health and equality, participating in food bank collections, helping at soup kitchens and contributing to local causes.
“A big focus is placed on us as human beings with a role to play in the society while being kind, compassionate and helpful. Football is awesome and has a big power.”
Maybe the future is bright, after all.
