WINDIES EXPECT TEST BACKLASH
WEST INDIES legend Desmond Haynes says the hosts are steeling themselves for an Ashes backlash when England arrive for their three-Test series in March.
England’s humiliation Down Under has left the red ball side in a state of flux with coach Chris
Silverwood’s position under threat.
But the Windies’ new lead selector says he is planning for a “committed and very strong” team to arrive for the first Test in Antigua on March 8.
“You have to take every opposition very seriously,” Haynes said.
“That performance in Australia was not what they expected. They are going to come to the Caribbean very strong and committed and it will be a good challenge for the West Indies team.”
England have not won a series in the Windies since 2003-04, losing 1-0 in 2008-09, drawing 1-1 in 2015 and losing 2-1 in 2018-19.
And with Caribbean cricket showing signs of improvement in all formats,
Haynes is optimistic about the future.
With a youthful T20 side pushing England so hard he believes West Indies have a raft of emerging talent who could prove to be global stars.
“Rovman Powell has been very impressive and I was also impressed with Akeal Hosein and his six-hitting,” added Haynes.
