ASHLEIGH BARTY smashed a 44-year home hoodoo to win the Australian Open singles title – then shared her historic triumph with Evonne Goolagong Cawley, Cathy Freeman and a cold beer.
The world No.1 fought off a feisty Danielle Collins 6-3 7-6 to get the Barty Party started.
And the proud indigenous Australian (below) was presented with the trophy in a jubilant Rod Laver Arena by her friend and fourtime champion Goolagong Cawley.
“That was a hell of a surprise,” said Barty. “I’m really glad I didn’t know as I’d have been feeling it. I haven’t seen her since this time last year.
“She’s an amazing human being, and I’m very, very lucky to call her a friend and to give her a hug in some of my biggest moments.”
Barty took the first set in 32 minutes but had to battle from 1-5 down in the second.
