Bundesliga big bucks ‘pick & mix’
THE German Bundesliga is banking a fortune from broadcasting its Saturday afternoon matches.
And that could put pressure on English football’s top brass to finally cave in on the 3pm ‘blackout’ – and move on from the pay-TV model of financing the game too.
In Germany, fans can take their pick of matches, dipping in and out of multiple games if they wish, all playing on a digital platform that must be leaving the Premier
League green with envy.
Robert Klein, Bundesliga International CEO said: “The digital age is here, we have companies that are growing and getting a foothold and paying significant money for significant rights.
“Yes, the ‘pay TV’ is still there but there are new products coming forward all the time.
“It’s digital and it’s exciting. The interactive feed is something we’re very proud of. The starting point for that was looking at what we thought the future consumption habits and consumption products would look like.
“How will I consume my Bundesliga experience, with five matches kicking off at 3.30?
“Our production group worked to develop this interactive feed which is effectively a mobile experience where you’re able to pick the matches you’re interested in and you’ll tick boxes selecting certain options.
“If a goal is scored it will bring it up for you while you’re watching your main game, which might be a different game. On top of that, there’s a social element so you can interact with whoever you choose to, plus a whole bunch of stats.
“The other thing you can do is enjoy your 90 minutes, watch the game you want and flick between all the matches in a conference style.”
