AJAX CLOSE TO £25M DEAL FOR SPURS WIJNNER
TOTTENHAM and Ajax are less than £3million apart on a deal that will take Dutch winger Steven Bergwijn back to the Amsterdam club.
Ajax have tabled an improved £18.3m offer after having their opening £15m bid rejected.
Tottenham chief executive Daniel Levy has lowered his initial asking price of £25m to around £21m after keeping the lines of negotiation with Ajax sporting director Marc Overmars open.
But both clubs believe an agreement will be reached before the transfer window closes tomorrow. Ajax initially asked to take the 24-year-old Dutch international on loan after new Spurs boss Antonio Conte made it clear he would not stand in the way of his departure.
That was knocked back immediately by Levy, who told Ajax he wanted to recoup most of the £26.7m he paid PSV Eindhoven for Bergwijn in January 2020.
Bergwijn (above) came through the youth system at the Dutch champions, but left early on after a row with a member of the coaching staff.
Overmars wants to strengthen Erik ten Hag’s squad as they push for a third successive Eredivisie title and a Champions League last-16 clash with Benfica.
