Deadly duo set the tone

Tranmere Rovers 0 Forest Green 4

FOREST GREEN’S Matt attack took them 10 points clear at the top – and surely nothing can stop Rob Edwards’ runaway leaders from winning their first EFL promotion.

Not even an unsavoury flashpoint – when objects and a smoke flare were thrown at visiting keeper Luke McGee, forcing a brief second-half stoppage – could take the shine off a huge win over their second-placed hosts.

And with Matty Stevens and Jamille Matt taking their combined goal tally for the season to 33,

Forest Green look well capable of adding to their 15-game unbeaten run.

Boss Edwards (above) said: “There are still 20 games to go so there are 60 points to play for there. We’ve got to make sure we keep going and make sure we fight for every single one of them.”

Edwards’ men took a stranglehold after six minutes.

Udoka Godwin-Mailfe’s long ball found Kane Wilson, who pulled the ball back for Stevens to slide in his 16th goal of the season from six yards.

The second, just before the interval, was a similar effort with Nicky Cadden picking out Matt, who poached his 17th of the campaign.

Tranmere’s comeback hopes died after 53 minutes when Cadden’s free-kick fell kindly for defender Jordan MooreTaylor to sweep in from 12 yards.

Worse was to follow, after 70 minutes, when Regan Hendry scored with a brilliant low volley from the edge of the area.

At least Tranmere’s day ended on a relative high point as Ross Doohan saved a 90th-minute penalty from Josh March.

Tranmere boss Micky Mellon said: “Credit to Forest Green, they were very good.”
