Mornington Crescent Cryering out for a Barry plaque, say stars
STARS and relatives are backing calls to honour Barry Cryer with a blue plaque at Mornington Crescent Tube station.
Monty Python legend Michael Palin and Only Connect star Victoria Coren Mitchell say it would be a perfect tribute.
Michael said: “A plaque would be a nice idea to honour him. Barry would probably have had a joke about blue plaques – as he had a joke for everything.”
Barry, who died last month at 86, was a regular on BBC Radio 4’s I’m Sorry I Haven’t a Clue for more than 40 years.
The nonsensical game Mornington
Crescent, named after the North London underground station, was a show staple.
The station already has a plaque for panellist Willie Rushton, who died in 1996.
In 2010, a nearby pub was renamed The Lyttelton Arms after late host Humphrey Lyttelton. Now a petition has been started by comedy website Chortle for a plaque for Barry and another former panellist, Tim Brooke-Taylor, who died in 2020 at 79.
Barry’s son Bob said: “We’re delighted this idea is being talked about in connection to dad’s memory. It was a very happy association during his life.“
