Swindon star dies aged 48 after illness
TRIBUTES have been paid to ex-Swindon Town and Carlisle United player Steve Finney, who has died at 48 after a short illness.
The striker started at Preston North End before a move to Manchester City.
But after failing to get first-team action he joined Swindon Town, winning the Division Two title in 1996, before moving to Carlisle in 1998.
Spells at Leyton Orient, Barrow, Chester City and Altrincham followed.
The married dad of two was coaching at Ullswater United, Cumbria, while working as a business manager for a fuel firm.
Swindon Town said: “We are heartbroken – Steve scored 22 goals including 16 goals in 1995/96 as Town stormed to the Second Division title.”
