Carlos in a virtual win

- By ROSS HEPPENSTALL at John Smith’s Stadium

CARLOS CORBERAN missed this FA Cup tie due to “personal reasons” – but still masterminded Huddersfield progression to the fifth round.

The Terriers boss watched the game remotely and was in regular contact via telephone with the club’s coaching staff.

Duane Holmes scored the winning goal in the 19th minute when he finished clinically after Josh Koroma flicked Sorba Thomas’ long pass into his path.

Corberan – Marcelo Bielsa’s former assistant at Leeds – has now seen his play-off chasing side embark on a 12-match unbeaten run.

First-team coach Danny Schofield said: “Carlos was still heavily involved and it’s always a collective discussion about the game and substitutions.

“Carlos always makes the final decision, as managers do, but we all know our roles and responsibilities.

“He was in contact with (assistant coach) Narcis Pelach via the phone.

“We knew the challenges Barnsley would bring to the stadium and they didn’t let us down in terms of what we expected. But the lads stood up to it and showed really true fighting terrier spirit and deserved the win in the end.”

Huddersfield flirted with relegation last season, but have been a side transformed this term and lie in the play-off places.

Schofield added: “It’s all about momentum and winning games. The lads are dancing around in the dressing room.”

In contrast, Tykes boss Poya Asbaghi said: “Confidence is low, but we have to create our own luck and concentrate on trying to staying in the Championship.” HUDDERSFIELD: Blackman 6, Pipa 6 (Turton 30, 6), Pearson 6, Sarr 6, Ruffels 6, Holmes 7 (Lees 84), Russell 7, Eiting 6 (O’Brien 60, 6), Koroma 7 (Sinani 60, 6), Rhodes 6 (Ward 84), Thomas 7.

Subs not used: Nicholls, Toffolo, High, Campbell.

BARNSLEY: Walton 6, Williams 6, Halme 6 (Helik 45, 6), Kitching 6, Andersen 7, Styles 6, Gomes 6, Palmer 6 (Cole 78), Bassi 6, Iseka 6 (Morris 45, 7), Marsh 6 (Benson 45, 6).
