Trip back to magic spot killed doctor

- BY MARK BRANAGAN

A GP fell 300ft to his death retracing his route along a notorious mountain ridge where he had proposed to his wife 27 years earlier.

Dr Jamie Butler, 54, had popped the question to Margaret on Striding Edge in the Lake District.

The devoted couple, of Altrincham, Gtr Manchester, returned in November to rekindle the moment.

An inquest heard that when they reached the ridge Margaret was too tired and Jamie carried on alone to find the exact spot where he had proposed.

In a statement, Margaret described seeing him walk off into the mist. Rescuers found his body.

She said: “Jamie was a loving husband with twin boys he adored. He will be forever missed.”

Verdict: Accident.
