Bank governor told ‘try being a low-paid carer for a day’

- BY CHRIS MCLAUGHLIN

BANK of England governor Andrew Bailey has been challenged to work as a carer for a day after his call for pay restraint to workers.

Care workers’ union GMB invited the £575,000-a-year chief to experience what life is like doing the low-paid roles.

In a letter, general secretary Gary Smith asked why Mr Bailey’s call for a curb on wage rises did not include limits on bosses’ pay or dividends.

Mr Bailey said earlier this month that pay restraint would be “vital” in holding back inflation, currently running at 5.4% but predicted to be heading for 7.25% by April.

Mr Smith said: “Working as a carer for a day would enable Mr Bailey to explain his reasoning to the people his policy would affect.”

The TUC warned that almost two thirds – 63% – of workers expect their pay to go up by less than prices this year as families struggle to make ends meet.

The Bank declined to comment.
