WWI dog tag goes home

-

A METAL detectorist who found a First World War soldier’s identity tag in a field has tracked down his family to return it.

Simon Hobson found the disc, bearing the name of William Thomas, near Henley in Suffolk.

He found William, a private in the Royal Army Medical Corps, died of his wounds aged 22 in the 1915 Gallipoli campaign.

Simon, 54, of Ipswich, said tracing the soldier’s Cardiff family was “better than finding a gold coin”.

He said: “I’m so glad I’ve found it and can return it.”
