Dog foils plot to sneaker lot of drugs
LAGS tried to smuggle drugs into prison hidden in the hollowed-out soles of a pair of trainers.
The shoes were sent to an inmate as a birthday present. But a sniffer dog indicated a positive hit during a routine inspection and guards discovered cavities in the soles.
A large bag of white powder – believed to be cocaine – was recovered.
A source said: “This was a very sophisticated smuggling operation that was thwarted thanks to a prison search dog.”
The Prison Service confirmed it was probing Monday’s incident, at Category B HMP Elmley on the Isle of Sheppey, near Canterbury in Kent.
Police are also investigating and an inmate has been placed on report.
