Glad to see top cop go
She made history as being the first-ever female leading Britain’s biggest police force, but Cressida Dick’s tenure at the Met has been far from glowing. This week she resigned as Police Commissioner, saying: “It is with huge sadness that following contact with the Mayor
of London today, it is clear that the Mayor no longer has sufficient confidence in my leadership to continue.
“He has left me no choice but to step aside.”
This lack of confidence is justified – how can we feel safe when there
have been recent episodes of police officers operating in a culture that is racist, homophobic and sexist?
Under her watch, among other blunders, the Met failed to stop PC Wayne Couzens before he raped and murdered Sarah Everard, and police officers photographed the bodies of two murdered sisters and shared the images on WhatsApp.
The Met should be the finest police force in the world, setting best practice for others to look up to. Its next leader needs to place importance on inclusivity, and create a culture of performance and results in the communities they serve. Only then can our trust be restored.
