Hair, hair to QC’s wig call
While I love tradition, I also believe in getting rid of practices that don’t sit well with the modern age.
I embrace change and progressive attitudes and so I support Leslie Thomas, a prominent and respected QC, who has called for the wearing of wigs in court to be
scrapped after supporting a black colleague, Michael Etienne.
Thomas said “wigs were fashioned for caucasian hair” and look “ridiculous” on black advocates. He added: “Wigs are 17th-century male fashion. To have them in the 21st century is nonsense.”
At present, if a barrister fails to wear a wig in court, they are in contempt. Let’s hope for the sake of our black barristers this law changes.
