Grandad’s DVLA jokes are a sign of the times

- BY STEPHEN HAYWARD

A GRANDAD is determined to have the last laugh after waiting eight months for his new driving licence.

Simon Barrett designed his own road signs mocking the DVLA.

One showing an old couple says: “You may be like this by the time DVLA sends your licence back.”

Simon, 76, a retired health promotion officer from Aberdeen, reapplied for his licence last July. He had been told to stop driving for medical reasons but was given the all-clear.

He said: “I started doing this in desperation.

“Then I realised there were tens of thousands in the same boat.”

The DVLA has apologised for delays, blaming Covid and strike action. Last year there was a backlog of 400,000 paper forms.

The DVLA said: “We are working extremely hard to reduce waiting times for paper applications but complex transactions where medical investigations are needed will take longer.”
