But great archive footage, rare interviews and a inquisitive voiceover from Doctor Who actress Pearl Mackie provide fascinating glimpses of a conflicted genius.
As well as detailing the reasons he would have never survived the #MeToo movement, this inventive film shows why he was loved by audiences across the world.
There is a wonderful interview with a 92-year-old woman who knew him as a workhouse kid in London, a fascinating reconstruction of a hostile press conference during the Red Scare and some wonderful clips of him kicking various authority figures up the backside.
