Cook rides to rescue in National
PAUL COOK is hoping to turn the clock back and rediscover his joy for the game after a surprising decision to manage in the National League.
Cook, sacked by Ipswich in December, has returned to manage Chesterfield — the club he guided into League One and with ambitions of reaching the Championship.
Almost seven years later he joins them in a dogfight with Stockport, Boreham Wood and Wrexham to try to regain their lost EFL place after a dramatic fall from grace.
“There’s no other club I would have dropped into the non-league for,” he maintained. “Watching their plight was tough for me and now I will give everything I’ve got to try and get them back into the Football League.”
Cook received the call following James Rowe’s sudden departure after he was suspended over alleged misconduct.
“It’s unusual to get a job like this with the team doing well,” he said. “I want to start enjoying myself again.”
