Give Putin tougher sanctions
LABOUR has urged the Government to impose “the hardest possible” sanctions on Putin and his billionaire cronies to stop them living in luxury – and cut them off from UK-made fashions, private jets and yachts.
Shadow Foreign Secretary David Lammy, Chancellor Rachel Reeves and International Trade boss Nick Thomas-Symonds said in a joint letter: “Putin and those around him should not be able to live a
Mayfair lifestyle in Moscow.”
In the letter to the Treasury and Foreign
Office, they also said they want more
Russian banks stopped from getting sterling and more rich Russians banned from the UK. They also called for new laws to register Russian money here, an Economic Crime Bill and rules to stop cash being squirrelled away.
They went on: “The hardest possible sanctions must be levelled against all those linked to Putin so the regime faces the severest... consequences.”
Labour also backs removing Russia from global money transfer system SWIFT. The move is blocked by Italy and Germany but Boris Johnson yesterday spoke to Dutch PM Mark Rutte about the “urgent” need to exclude Russia.
Russia last night hit back at sanctions, vowing to seize foreign citizens’ funds.
