This comedy horror could be nirvana for fans of grunge pioneer Dave Grohl, but everyone else will wonder what possessed Hollywood to greenlight such a ramshackle vanity project.
The idea, credited to Grohl himself, is a rock ’n’ roll Amityville, as his group Foo Fighters (playing themselves) move into a haunted house to begin work on a new album.
For the next four weeks, the Monkey Wrench hitmakers will live Monkees-style in a decaying mansion in LA’s celebrity enclave of Encino as frontman Grohl falls under the spell of a flesh-eating demon.
There’s goofy charm, gory special effects and the band members’ different acting styles make the action feel as unpredictable as a Children In Need sketch.
Grohl is, somewhat disappointingly, just mildly hammy but rhythm guitarist Pat Smear’s performance is genuinely unique as he shuffles into shots as if dragged by a set of invisible strings.
Still, comedy horrors need to be a bit funnier and a lot scarier than this.
