WHAT CAN I DO ABOUT... binge drinking?

-

People who binge drink are not alcohol dependent, but it can still end up damaging their health.

“Ask yourself why you binge drink – is it to reduce stress, anxiety, boredom, other negative feelings or to feel more at ease socially?” asks Martin Preston of addiction clinic Delamere (delamere.com). Having a good reason to change will help motivate you.

“Start by writing down all the reasons you need to slow down or quit drinking alcohol. When you feel tempted to drink, look back at your list.”

While you are trying to minimise your drinking habits, avoiding bars, events, or other activities that centre around excessive drinking will help.

Positive lifestyle changes like regular physical exercise, nutritious eating, participation in interesting sports or hobbies can also increase your motivation.

“You may find it beneficial to avoid spending time with specific people or groups who focus on alcohol for fun for a little while,” adds Martin.
