Daryl Powell branded his side’s victory as “scratchy and scrambling”.

The Wolves could not quite put their opponents to bed despite a dominant first-half and the French club staged a stirring second-half fightback.

“You have to give credit to Toulouse, they fought to the end,” said Powell, “But we need to be a whole lot better.”

Toby King was first to score from a George Williams chip over the defence, then Toulouse hit back with a penalty from centre Chris Hankinson.

But Williams and Stefan Ratchford created the space for winger Josh Charnley to cross in the 20th minute.

Giant French prop Justin Sangare came on to stiffen the Toulouse defence but Warrington centre King struck for his second try to make it 16-2 at the break.

Peter Mata’utia then intercepted a pass and released Williams for an 80-metre sprint and try.

The 4,887 supporters were given something to cheer when debut signing Olly Ashall-Bott went on a 30-metre dash through the Warrington defence to score behind the posts.

Charnley chalked his second moments later then hooker Danny Walker scored by the posts.

Romain Navarrete added some respectability to the scoreline six minutes from time before second-rower Maxime Stefani struck for a late try on his debut.

Warrington face another French side in Catalans Dragons next and coach Powell added: “We have to be a whole lot better against them. We’ve got some players coming back and we’ll quickly work on what we could improve upon.”

TOULOUSE: Tries: Ashall-Bott, Navarrete, Stefani. Pen: Hankinson. Cons: Hankinson (2). WARRINGTON: Tries: King (2), Charnley (2), Williams, Clark. Cons: Ratchford (4).
