Pool and gym for Rishi...as Brits left to shiver

- BY JOHN SIDDLE

CHANCELLOR Rishi Sunak is building a pool, gym and tennis court at his £2million country pile – as ordinary Brits face a cost-of-living crisis.

Work is well under way at his weekend retreat, a Grade II-listed manor in North Yorkshire.

Mr Sunak’s wife Akshata, daughter of Infosys tech tycoon N.R. Narayana Murthy, is estimated to have a personal fortune of £430million.

Upgrades at the 19th century manor – which Mr Sunak paid £1.5million for in 2015 – angered union chiefs.

GMB political officer Gavin Sibthorpe said: “Seeing our mega-rich Chancellor splashing out on a pool while millions struggle makes me sick to my stomach.

WALLOWS

“We are in the worst cost-of-living crisis in a generation, with our key worker heroes unable to put food on the table or turn on the heating.

“Meanwhile, the man who cut Universal Credit for the poorest and is forcing a National Insurance hike for millions of workers wallows in luxury. It’s utterly abhorrent.”

Mr Sunak, 41, was granted planning permission by his local council last year. Documents show the pool house would also include a hot tub.

Labour councillor Gerald Ramsden said: “None of the Tory Cabinet are in touch with the people on the ground, who need all the help they can get.”

During the pandemic, Mr Sunak was snapped with a £180 heated bluetooth mug. And he was left embarrassed for not knowing the cost of a tin of beans.
