Court reinstates the death penalty for Boston bomber

- BY KAREN ROCKETT KILLER

BOSTON Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev has had his death sentence reinstated by the US Supreme Court.

The bombing in 2013, during which three people died and 260 were wounded, was carried out by Tsarnaev and his older brother Tamerlan, who was shot dead by police at the time.

On Friday, the court reversed an earlier appeals court ruling to void Tsarnaev’s death penalty. Justices voted 6-3 to reject claims that his 2015 trial was conducted improperly.

A federal appeals court had removed 28-year-old Tsarnaev’s death sentence in July 2020, arguing that the judge in his original trial had failed to question potential jurors about how much they’d been following the case in the news. It was also said the defence team should have been allowed to bring up a triple murder in Boston in 2011.
