BEEF OVER BOEUF FOR JAIL GUARDS
STIAN ALEXANDER LAGS given “slop” got into a strop after being trained to dish up posh nosh to jail staff.
Warders at Wormwood Scrubs tuck in at a fancy new restaurant launched by First Dates TV star Fred Sirieix, for a charity project.
A dozen inmates at the West London jail were trained to work as waiters and a maitre ’d, just like Channel 4 smoothie Fred.
They now staff The Escape, serving staff with French favourites boeuf bourguignon and
cassoulet. But inmates at the 1,300-capacity jail hit boiling point as word spread. A source said: “It proved hard to swallow.”
Earlier, jail inspectors labelled cons’ meals “appalling” and
“unpalatable”. The Independent Monitoring Board watchdog called meals “slop” and said evening dinner went cold in takeaway trays. A jail source said: “It’s galling for prisoners cooking up fancy meals, then going back to their cells to be fed slop.”
At last year’s opening of The Escape – which got £108,000 public funding – TV’s Fred said: “Apprentices can get qualifications and are ready and waiting to work after release.”
A Prison Service spokesman said: “All meals meet nutritional guidelines and our on-site restaurant gives prisoners skills to help find work on release and steer clear of crime.”
