Equal rights call on miscarriage
BORIS Johnson is under mounting pressure to introduce paid leave for working women who suffer a miscarriage, after Northern Ireland approved new laws of its own.
MPs have ramped up calls for them to be given the same rights as those who lose their babies after 24 weeks of pregnancy or are stillborn – they are entitled to two weeks’ paid leave.
Campaigners have long been calling for the right to be extended to early miscarriage and are urging the PM to act after Northern Ireland, which has devolved health powers, became the first place in Europe to do so earlier this month.
An estimated one in five women suffers a miscarriage in the first three months of pregnancy.
Angela Crawley, the MP leading the campaign, said: “There is a clear consensus in favour of providing this support for grieving parents.”
