WHAT CAN I DO ABOUT... adult acne?

-

If you’re suffering from adult acne, look for triggers in your diet which may make the situation worse.

“There is evidence that high consumption of sugar-rich food as well as dairy products, in particular low-fat dairy, may worsen acne,” says NHS Dermatologist Dr Kathy Taghipour (dermconsult.co.uk).

“If you suffer from acne, consider cutting down on these foods while your skin heals. Certain medications can also induce acne, such as some anti-depressants, ciclosporin, and steroids.”

Lifestyle factors such as lack of sleep and smoking are also potential triggers, so try to get eight hours of kip. Cut down on smoking too.

“In contrast to teenage skin, adult skin with acne may not be greasy and therefore may not tolerate many topical acne treatments that can cause dryness,” says Dr Taghipour.

“Talk to a GP or dermatologist about treatments with topical retinoids which are the most effective ingredients to treat and prevent acne.”
