‘2-for-1’ ban delay saves Easter deals

- BY STEPHEN HAYWARD

CUT-price offers on Easter eggs have been spared the axe this year after shops were given until October to end “two-for-one” deals.

Such promotions on unhealthy food and drink were due to be outlawed in April, ahead of Easter, in a clampdown on obesity.

But despite campaigners saying aggressive sales of sugary, salty and fatty foods fuel the UK’s obesity crisis, ministers ruled the industry needed more time to prepare.

Official data shows 13 million adults are obese, double that of 20 years ago.

Sainsbury’s has already ended multi-buy deals on a voluntary basis but rivals still have them.

Tam Fry of the National Obesity Forum blamed lobbying by manufacturers for the “disgraceful” delay.
