My old school pal Mel was always a class act

- EXCLUSIVE BY EMMA PRYER and NIKI WALDEGRAVE in Sydney

MELANIE Elizabeth Bownds was always the life and soul as a schoolgirl… and very little has changed over the years.

Apart from her name, that is. This snap from her teen years show a fresh-faced Rebel Wilson-to-be attending her Year 12 prom in Sydney 25 years ago.

Judging by the pearl necklace and earrings, the Pitch Perfect actress, 42, has always been a class act. And school pal Min Petkovic wasn’t surprised she became a

Hollywood star. “She was always destined for life on the stage,” says Min.

“She always had the gift of the gab, and knows how to crack a joke . She had the X factor.” The pair were at Tara

Anglican School for Girls in suburb

North Parramatta. Min says: “We were good friends. Mel made everyone laugh, the life and soul of the party.

“She was school captain, on the debating team and good at tennis and basketball. She was head of the drama club and always took lead roles.” They lost touch when they left school, but Min treasures snaps of them in those days and is delighted her old pal is thriving. “It’s amazing to how her star is shining brightly,” says Min.
