Protester a true hero

-

I could not believe my eyes when I saw the footage of the woman who ran on to the set during a live Russian news broadcast to stage a protest about the war in Ukraine. The sign she held up, written in Russian and English, said: “No war. Stop the war. Don’t believe the propaganda. They lie to you here.”

Brave Marina Ovsyannikova instantly became a global hero.

But the journalist and mothersaid afterwards: “I believe in what I did but I now understand the scale of the problems I’ll have to deal with.

“I’m extremely concerned for my safety... I absolutely don’t feel like a hero.

“I really want to feel this sacrifice was not in vain, and that people will open their eyes.”

Marina was fined 30,000 roubles (£215) for unlawful protest, but thankfully was released. The Kremlin tried to dismiss her actions as “hooliganism”.

But many of us believe her to be extremely courageous – and a symbol of truth in Putin’s false war in Ukraine.
