We’ll save war pets

Rescuers who have plucked 500 animals from Ukraine urged refugees fleeing Russian bombs to take their pets with them. Many don’t, fearing they won’t be allowed into other nations with strict quarantine rules.

But Theodora Iona, campaign leader for PETA Foundation, said: “Our message is clear – please take animal companions with you. Help is available at the borders.

“We’ve found abandoned dogs tied to railings and cats cowering in their carriers. Working with local groups, we’ve brought more than 500 hungry and frightened animals to safety. Cats, dogs, even newborn puppies – some from the streets of Kyiv, Kharkiv and Donetsk. These animals were alone, confused, stressed, starving and frightened as bombs and bullets rained down.”

PETA wants the UK to shorten the quarantine period here. Theodora added: “A partner team in Romania has also entered Ukraine to collect dogs. Even in the depths of despair, humanity shines.”
