T20 stars want ‘life’ over cash

- EXCLUSIVE BY

TYMAL MILLS isn’t surprised that top whiteball players are choosing to put families and mental health before cash.

Mills is gearing up to play for Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League.

But Jason Roy and Alex Hales have withdrawn from this year’s T20 tournament, citing the pressure put on them in Covid bubbles during the past two years.

Mills said: “These guys have families to think about. It’s a bit different for me because I was injured the whole winter previous to this.

“But these guys have been playing for the past two years through Covid in bubbles, almost exclusively. It does add up.

“Everybody is affected by things differently and I think we’re now seeing some guys recognise when they need a break.

“I had an offer to go to the Pakistan Super League but, for me, it wasn’t right.

“I took the chance to have three weeks at home before going to the IPL as opposed to going to Pakistan and earning more money.

“You need to try to keep yourself fresh – and that’s something more players are conscious of now.”
