Toon eye on Blues’ Godfrey

- BY TOM HOPKINSON

NEWCASTLE are stepping up their interest in Everton defender Ben Godfrey as boss Eddie Howe looks to strengthen his defence ahead of next season.

The Magpies have some breathing space in the relegation battle with a recent good run of form.

And with Premier League football on the cards next time out, thoughts are now being turned to recruitment.

Godfrey is understood to figure highly on the Toon’s wanted list with Howe a big fan of the 24-year-old.

The England defender impressed against Newcastle on Thursday in Everton’s 1-0 win and his versatility and potential mean he could be a good addition to the squad.

If Everton fail to beat the drop, they will struggle to keep hold of Godfrey.

Although the wages on offer at Newcastle will make any potential move from the North West an attractive proposition.

Newcastle looked at a move for Godfrey in January and are expected to see if a deal can be resurrected.
