Our fund helps to save the orphans

- EXCLUSIVE BY NIGEL NELSON Political Editor

ANOTHER 100 orphans are ready to be evacuated from war-ravaged Ukraine with the help of the £60,000 raised so far by Sunday Mirror readers.

The charity Hope and Homes for Children, which our appeal supports, wants to get children to safety from five orphanages in the city of Odesa, where fierce fighting has broken out.

Hope and Homes chief Mark Waddington said: “They are sitting on their suitcases ready to go. And we will get them out once we have permission from the Ukrainian authorities.”

Last week the charity evacuated 52 orphans from Dnipro in central Ukraine.

Social worker Daria Doshchuck, 40, helped to lead them to safety as they made the hazardous trip to the Romanian border.

She said: “When the first rocket hit near our orphanage it was very scary.” ■■To donate to our appeal, go to hopeandhomes.org.
